When we start working with energy, it becomes clear that objects and spaces can become a record for the energies expressed around or within them. Keeping lower vibrational energy clear from your space or personal field can be an important part of your spiritual practice, often referred to as spiritual hygiene.
Energy clearing is a big topic we can get into another time so for the purposes of keeping your mala's energetic field clear from unwanted lower vibrations there are several things you can do.
Typically, crystals are cleansed in water to refresh and purify their energy but this isn't always appropriate given the chemical composition of some crystals and if your mala contains wooden beads, this can be even more detrimental as the cord can stay damp inside the beads causing the cord and even the beads to deteriorate over time.
The best ways to cleanse your mala are:
Smoke Cleansing - the smoke from smouldering herbs or wood has been used for thousands of years in ceremony for clearing energy and consecrating a space. There are even studies that show the physical change in air quality after thorough smoke cleansing has taken place. Another big topic to get into but using smoke alongside your intention for cleansing is a great way to help refresh your mala's energy.
Sound Cleansing - ting sha or other high pitched sound instruments or rattles are good at cutting through density and shaking loose any stagnation, combined with your intention again - intention being a key ingredient in all ceremonial work!
Other crystals - Selenite is especially good at keeping a high vibration running through your mala. Selenite plates or dishes are ideal places to keep your mala when it isn't being used or worn.
Violet Ray invocation - Imagining a violet ray of light or a violet flame clearing away any dense energy is a powerful practice. See the energy leaving your mala and being transmuted into divine white light.
Reiki - if your attuned to Reiki, you can use this to cleanse clear and transmute any lower vibrational energy and to protect the mala from taking on anything that is not of the highest frequency of Love.
Ground - although sometimes it is seen as disrespectful to place your mala on the ground in some cultures, earthing your mala so that the crystals can connect back into Gaia's energy grids can offer a good way to refresh it's energy. Do this with reverence and intention - there's that word again! If you feel uncomfortable placing it directly on the ground, you could keep it in its little pouch, lay it on a stone, leaf or a tree or take a small bowl of sand and place it directly in that instead. The sand can be offered back to the earth when you feel you are done with it.
Sun and moon light - both are great for the same reason as grounding - the light can help recharge crystals. Feel into which type of light is best for you and your mala. The sun is a warming energy and the moon is cooling.
Rice - it is sometimes suggested that due to the absorbent quality of rice, it makes a good medium for cleansing crystals that are not suitable for water cleansing.
Getting to know your mala's energy is really important in establishing a good relationship with this energetic being. Knowing how it feels when it is freshly cleansed is important because it will guide you as to when it needs a refresh and also for how long. It might never ask to be cleansed. Simply wearing it in the sunshine is energising for it and for you and this might be all that is needed.
Perhaps if you haven't worked with it or worn it for some time, you might feel like to need to reconnect. Holding it to your heart and asking the crystals to support you is a good practice for this. And to say it once more time - using your intention - stating out loud or in your head - that the crystals are cleansed and cleared from any lower vibration and that they are activated with their original divine light can be all that you need to reconnect and reawaken your special garland friend.
